Everything seems normal in Mrs. Hudson’s prim and pretty ornamental garden at 221B Baker Street (Hounslow). Normal, that is, until the disappearance of Lord Baskerville the fishing gnome. Might one of His Lordship’s many enemies have done something awful? Has the Baskerville curse struck again? Is that eerie howling in the night really the fearsome cry of a supernatural hellhound? This looks like another case for that famous gentle-gnome detective, Sherlock Gnome.

About the Show

Sherlock Gnome’s Hound of the Baskervilles is a comedy mystery musical for children, ideally suited for a leavers’ show at the end of Year 6 (ages 10-11).
It is one-act show, 50 minutes in length, with minimal staging requirements. Most of the songs are chorus numbers, with a few character numbers to allow the more able kids to show off.

Production History

Sherlock Gnome’s Hound of the Baskervilles is being premiered at Ibstock Place School, Roehampton, London, July 2007.

The Story

In Mrs. Hudson’s prim and pretty front garden at 221b Baker Street (Hounslow) something horrible has happened. Lord Baskerville, the fishing gnome has mysteriously disappeared.
As Mrs. Hudson shuts her front door, the many and varied garden ornaments come to life, wondering what on earth to do about this state of affairs. The position of fishing gnome is the most prestigious in the garden. What on earth can have happened?
Suspicion falls upon a ferocious hellhound, whom all have heard eerily howling away in the dead of night – although none have actually seen it.
A new fishing gnome, Henry (purchased at Baskerville’s Gnome Emporium, purveyors of the finest gnomes since 1882), is terrified at the thought of the hound, especially when told of a legendary curse upon all Baskerville fishing gnomes.
The baffling disappearance stumps Inspector Lescargot of the Yard (that’s the Back Yard, not the Scotland variety). The portly porcelain snail finds he is getting nowhere fast. No, the only one who can solve the mystery of the hound is that super sleuth, Sherlock Gnome.
Sherlock is sceptical about the curse and he and his lifelong friend, Dottie Watson, start to investigate the clues. They soon discover that there is a long list of suspects, all of whom have motive and opportunity: these include Hildegard the wheelbarrow gnome, Spike the hedgehog boot-brush, Harriet the heron pond protector and Ziggy the doorstop gnome.
Gradually Sherlock and Dottie, through patient investigation and logical deduction, discern the facts from the fable and unravel the terrible truth behind the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles.
